This year the Astronomy Club has begun a new tradition of having space parties where they gather around at a park to look at celestial objects with the telescope.
Club advisor Danny Solis has been teaching astronomy for two years, and was excited to share his passion with more students.
“With understanding the universe, we can better understand ourselves and why we exist the way we do,” Solis said.
Solis said it was his students that brought up the idea of creating the Astronomy Club because they wanted to “learn more about space and our surroundings, and the cosmos.”
The club’s primary goal is to get people “aware of the beautiful spaceship that we’re in and basically that we’re traveling through space,” Solis said.
His goal for the club is to get more students involved and to open everyone’s eyes to the universe we live in.
One of the members, junior Chloe Bullock, said this is her second year in the Astronomy Club and her first time attending one of the space parties.
“I’m just excited to see some stars,” she said.
For her first time at one of these space parties, Bullock said she was hoping to see some stars and the Halley comet.
Bullock said she originally joined because she wanted to “pursue a career in astronomy,” but over time the club has impacted her social skills and helped her make more friends.
Bullock said the club members hope to go on field trips by the end of the year.
Solis said the club is thinking about turning it into an opportunity to make some money to pay for club fees and field trips. The club will be offering their telescopes to people to come and look at the stars.
To join the club, attend one of the meetings held every Monday in room G104.
