Fifteen of DJ Perera’s AP Art students visited TCU’s art department on Dec. 2.

Associate Professor Nick Bontrago led the Pioneers on a tour of the art facilities to explore possibilities for art in their future.

After the tour, all of the students made a 3D scan of themselves and created 3D artwork on a program called Tinkercad. The Pioneers also made their own pins and viewed a laser cutter in action.

“It made me realize there’s so much more than drawing on a sheet of paper,” Brianna Christiansen, 11, said, “many more ways of being an artist.”

  • Tatum Harris, 11, takes a punch from Lauren Gaona, 11 for a 3D scan.

  • Parker Heiner, 11, poses for the 3D scanner. “It’s an inspiration to know what to strive towards after high school,” Heiner said.

  • TCU Associate Professor Chris Powell shows TCU students’ pottery to the AP Art class.

  • Peyton Curtis, 12, poses while TCU Associate Professor Nick Bontrago scans her with a 3D scanner. “I’m a mixed media artis, so I’m thinking of all the ways I could use 3D stuff in my art,” Curtis said.
