How Good to be Ava Lee

Senior Finds Herself as Lead in ‘Seussical’

Elliott Walker as Jojo and Ava Lee as The Cat in the Hat perform in “Seussical the Musical.”

“Seussical the Musical” focuses on The Cat in the Hat and Horton (from “Horton Hears a Who”) and their adventures to try and save a speck of dust. Senior Ava Lee plays The Cat in the Hat.
Lee began theater when she was in elementary school in a production of”Annie,” but despite her long musical career, this is one of her first lead roles.
“It’s a very nice way to express myself, ” Lee said. “I really feel like myself when in a big theater.”
Lee’s love for theater allowed her to find her passion for the big stage and allowed her to find herself in the characters she plays and the people she is with every day in theater. According to Theater Director Melissa Wallis, this includes hundreds of hours spent singing and dancing to produce the school year’s biggest musical.
“(It’s) three months of summer work to prepare for it, then three months of rehearsal,” Wallis said.
But Lee said that’s what makes the musical so great.
“We rehearse from the beginning of eighth period all the way till 6:30 p.m.,” Lee said.
Lee said she followed one of her best friends, senior Aubrey Walker, to being the performer she is today.
“She plays a really big role in my status in the department,” Lee said. “I owe a lot of my achievements to her.”
Through all of the grueling hours and sacrifices she made throughout the musical season, Lee said she still manages to stay positive and love what she does.
Lee said she has learned so much through theater and life on stage.
“I’m going to be myself no matter what, and that’s kind of what theater has helped me with is being more confident,” she said. “It’s worth it. I love it.”
