Be Better, Be Bermeo
Throughout his life, assistant band director Jesus Bermeo had constant weight put onto his shoulders. Being continuously surrounded by the pressure to be better, Bermeo soon found that constant demand is what established who he is today.
“I’ve always felt like I knew what I wanted to do since middle school, but someone who really kind of changed my path was my band director,” Bermeo said. “He’s the one that really challenged me on my instrument, knowing that I was talented. He put me in a path where I had to think ‘okay, you want to be great, so this is what it takes’”.
When Bermeo began his music journey in 6th grade, he automatically fell in love with it. From the beginning, everyone around him knew he had true talent. Although he originally played flute, his love for creating music sprouted even more when he began playing saxophone. Throughout Bermeo’s learning experience, his band director consistently pushed him to his limit. Now, he uses that same attitude towards his students, creating an environment of perseverance for the band of gold.
“Part of who I am is although we are good, we always have the opportunity of doing better. I think my last year of teaching should be my best year because of all the things I’ve learned and improved” Bermeo said.
Throughout his eight years of teaching, Bermeo made it his goal to always be better than the year before. He is constantly working hard to progress his student’s success, and never fails to put the effort required to be the best version of himself. This includes his involvement in rehearsals, his two jazz classes, and the exceeded amount of sleep he doesn’t get from staying up to work on music projects. Overall, Bermeo’s whole life revolves around the success of his band, and he never falls too far from making that his main priority.
Although he is very serious about the band’s success, he also enjoys having fun and being there to support his students. He never fails to share his love for music and his astonishing talents any chance he gets. Between sharing his skills and developing a friendly and easy-going atmosphere, his students always enjoy being in his presence.
“I really enjoy that Bermeo has been a musician himself and went through highschool experiences like we are now,” says Junior band student Lillian Strauch. “So, since he’s also been in our position, he understands and relates to us by giving us great feedback.”
Bermeo said he’s consistently determined to give his best version not only for him, but everyone around him.
“If I was to give advice to a student wanting to pursue music, just make sure that you love music for sure. It’s something that you must want to wake up to everyday.” Bermeo said. “For me, I’m always happy to go to work. I’m always happy working with my students. I’m happy doing what I love. Just make sure it’s something you could see yourself committing to for a long time.”
